Mauritius subsidizes basic Internet Access

With a view to bridge the digital divide and make the Internet affordable to all its citizens, the Government of Mauritius is subsidizing the cost of basic Internet access.

Since January 2013 basic a Broadband Connection of 256kbps is now available at Rs 200 (€5) per month. This offer is financed under the Universal Service Fund.

This measure aims at empowering the Mauritian citizens to gain access to the Internet irrespective of their financial means and give the opportunity to low income families to join the information age. It will increase access to a wider spectrum of the population and help in meeting the government's objective to achieve 60% of broadband penetration in households by 2014.
