Abstract

Hybrid work has reshaped the dynamics of agile software development, introducing new complexities in communication and knowledge sharing. This study investigates how to optimise knowledge exchange in South African hybrid agile teams through various communication-related techniques. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with agile practitioners working in hybrid Scrum environments in South Africa. Thematic analysis revealed four key constructs influencing knowledge sharing: building trusting relationships, leveraging technology, mitigating cultural constraints, and nurturing transactive memory. Findings indicate that communication frequency, availability, psychological safety, and openness are foundational to building trust in hybrid teams. Furthermore, management plays a critical role in creating inclusive environments, enabling tool fluency, and fostering structured collaboration. The study offers practical recommendations and contributes to the growing body of research on hybrid collaborative work. Therefore, this work is relevant to researchers and practitioners seeking to improve team effectiveness and knowledge management in South African hybrid agile settings.
