Hosted by the Government of South Africa through the Department of Science and Technology and Supported by the European Commission, IST-Africa 2010 took place in Durban, 19 - 21 May 2010.

Part of the IST-Africa Initiative, which is supported by the European Commission under the ICT Theme of Framework Programme 7 (FP7), IST-Africa 2010 was the fifth in an Annual Conference Series which brings together senior representatives from leading commercial, government & research organisations across Africa and from Europe, to bridge the Digital Divide by sharing knowledge, experience, lessons learnt and good practice and discussing policy related issues.

IST-Africa 2010 was supported by the Department of Science and Technology and the European Commission and Technically Co-Sponsored by the IEEE South Africa Computer Chapter and the Computer Society of South Africa. Major Sponsors included South Africa - Finland Knowledge Partnership on ICT project (SAFIPA) and NOKIA.

IST-Africa 2010 was a great success with over 450 participants from 51 countries and four continents. Many of the European presentations in this year's conference programme were funded under FP6 and FP7.

In the context of focusing on the Role of ICT for Africa's Development, the Opening Plenary on Wednesday 06 May featured a high level dialogue on Implementation of the Africa-EU Partnership on Science, Information Society and Space. The Closing Plenary on Friday 08 May focused on Initiatives Supporting Development of Regional S&T.

Pre-Announcement of IST-Africa 2011

Hosted by the Government of Botswana through the Department of Research, Science and Technology, Supported by the European Commission and Technical Co-Sponsored by IEEE, IST-Africa 2011 will take place 04 - 06 May in Gaborone. IST-Africa 2011 is the sixth in this Annual Conference Series.

IST-Africa 2010 Best Paper Award

The Best Paper Award was presented to " Technology Solutions to Strengthen the Integration of Marginalized Communities into the Global Knowledge Society", authored by Bulumko Hlungulu, Dumani Kunjuzwa, Nkanyiso Ndlovu, Jimmy Samalenge, Ngwenya Sikhumbuzo, Mamello Thinyane and Alfredo Terzoli, University of Fort Hare, South Africa

The Runner-up Paper was presented to "Towards Harmonisation of Health Information Systems in Malawi: Challenges and Prospects", authored by Boubakar Barry, Association of African Universities, Ghana; Charles Barton, Australian National University; Victor Chukwuma, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Nigeria; Les Cottrell, 4SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, US; Umar Kalim, Pakistani National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST); Monique Petitdidier, Laboratoire d'Atmosphère, Milieux, Observations Spatiales, France and Babatunde Rabiu, Federal University of Technology, Nigeria.

IST-Africa 2010 Best Demonstration Stand Award

The Best Demonstration Stand Award was presented to "SocioTech SA" and the Runner-up Award was presented to "Chisimba".
