National Science Week, Uganda, 17 - 21 September

The Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) is organizing the 2012 National Science Week to take place from Monday 17th to Friday 21st September 2012. The general theme of the week is "Uganda at 50 Years: the Journey towards a Science and Technology Led Society".

Hon Matia Kasaija, Minister of State for Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Planning will officially open the Science Week on Monday 17th September 2012 in Kabale District.

The Week is intended to help policy makers, students, scientists, researchers, the business community and the general public appreciates the pivotal role of Science and Technology (S&T) in the economic and social transformation of Uganda. It consists of a series of events organized by the science, technology and entrepreneurial community which highlight the role of S&T in improving household incomes; reflect on scientific and technological achievements; assess overall progress towards strengthening Uganda's science, technology and innovation (STI) capability; identify challenges and recommend future actions for S&T advancement in Uganda.

The 2012 National Science Week events will consist of a series of activities aimed at;

- helping students understand and appreciate careers in science and technology,

- disseminating research findings on key national development issues,

- reflecting on strategies for re-orienting the science, technology and innovation structures to national development goals,

- recognizing scientific and technological excellence and outstanding achievements of Ugandan Scientists as well as taking science to the general public.
