IST-Africa 2013 Advance Programme

Hosted by the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology, Supported by the European Commission and African Union Commission, IST-Africa 2013 will take place in Nairobi from 29 - 31 May 2013. The 3rd Annual IST-Africa Living Lab Thematic Working Group Meeting will take place on 28 May 2013 as a pre-conference event.

Part of the IST-Africa Initiative, which is supported by the European Commission under the ICT Theme of Framework Programme 7 (FP7), IST-Africa 2013 is the eighth in an annual services of Ministerial Level Technology Research Conferences that brings together senior representatives from leading commercial, government & research organisations across Africa and from Europe, to bridge the Digital Divide by sharing knowledge, experience, lessons learnt and good practice related to Information Society and ICT Adoption, Policy and Research.

IST-Africa 2013 focuses on Applied ICT research in the areas of eHealth, Technology Enhanced Learning and ICT Skills, Living Labs, Digital Libraries, Open Source Software, Mobile Applications, Cloud Computing, ICT Regulatory Frameworks, ICT for eInclusion, eInfrastructures, ICT for Environmental Sustainability, eAgriculture, eGovernment and International Cooperation.

The Call for Papers was very heavily oversubscribed. The Advance Programme incorporates 2 plenary sessions and 44 parallel sessions in the Scientific Programme with 167 presenters from 42 countries - 19 European countries; 22 African countries and the US.

IST-Africa directly supports the goals of the 8th Africa-EU Partnership on Science, Information Society and Space, the African Ministerial Council on Science and Technology (AMCOST) and the Consolidated Plan of Action for the African Regional Action Plan on the Knowledge Economy (ARAPKE).

Online Registration

All presenters should complete registration online by 08 March using their existing log in details prior to the publication of the Final Programme.

Early bird registration is available up to 16 March.

Practical Information

IST-Africa is taking place in the conference centre of the Safari Park Hotel, 25 mins outside Nairobi city centre on a secure compound. Accommodation in Nairobi is expensive. Discounted rates for Safari Park are available as part of registration and require payment in advance to finalise the booking. There are a limited amounts of rooms available at these rates.

Yellow Book - When travelling to East Africa, it is necessary to bring proof of Yellow Fever vaccine. If you have not previously had this vaccine it is advisable to get it several weeks prior to travelling. When you get the vaccine you will receive a Yellow Book, which confirms the life of the vaccine and you need to bring this with you to show it when boarding flights.

Visa - Please check with the Kenyan Embassy if you require a visa in advance of travelling. Some countries have a facility whereby you can purchase a single entry visa upon arrival in Nairobi.
