Kenya hosts first IBM Research Lab in Africa

A memorandum of understanding was signed on 13th August 2012 to set up the first IBM Research Lab on the African continent in Kenya.

IBM Research - Africa will be established in Nairobi, Kenya, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) through the Kenya ICT Board. It has been agreed that Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) will host the first IBM Research Lab in its state-of-the-art Learning Resource Centre.

The lab will conduct basic and applied research focused on solving problems relevant to Africa and will contribute to the building of a Science and Technology base for the continent. Key research areas to be explored will include Next Generation Public Sector, Smarter Cities and Human Capacity Development.

The new lab will also establish a Resident Scientist Programme which will recruit applicants from all over Africa to work side-by-side with IBM researchers in the lab.
